Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, abortion is legal in Ohio. Abortion clinics provide abortion care up through 21 weeks and 6 days from the start of your last period (called gestation).

To receive support from Abortion Fund of Ohio, you must live in Ohio and be getting an abortion in-state or travel out-of-state for care.

AFO cannot support patients from out-of-state at this time. To find an abortion fund in your area, visit the National Network of Abortion Funds’ Find-a-Fund tool

Unfortunately, the demand for support is high, so AFO often can only contribute to a portion of costs. You can find additional funding support on our Help page.

AFO reaches out to the clinic you’re scheduled with directly, so our support is applied when you arrive for your appointment. Please note that AFO cannot reimburse for appointments that have already been paid.

There is no age requirement to receive support from Abortion Fund of Ohio. However, minors in Ohio will either need a judicial bypass or a parent or guardian’s consent to get an abortion. AFO can assist minors who need help with the judicial bypass process through our legal program.

Other resources that can help may include abortion funds or practical support organizations. Some common groups that AFO’s patients have used are:

Self-managed abortion (SMA) is the practice of having an abortion outside of the traditional medical system. SMA using abortion pills has similar medical safety and efficacy as medication abortion through an abortion clinic, but self-managing abortion can come with additional legal risks. Self-managed abortion is not a crime in Ohio, but we know that people can still be criminalized for self-managed abortion and pregnancy loss. To learn more about legal rights around self-managed abortion and reproductive health care, check out If/When/How’s Repro Legal Help Line. For Ohio-specific questions about your legal rights, check out AFO’s Legal Access Program.

Ohio has a ban on telehealth abortion care, but that ban is currently blocked in court. However, because this is a more recent development, not all pharmacies carry abortion pills & not all clinics offer virtual appointments.

However, there are some providers in states with more protected abortion laws that prescribe and counsel patients in all 50 states via telehealth. Some of these providers offer virtual visits & follow-up support, whereas others only provide medication. Using online means of acquiring abortion pills, particularly if self-managing an abortion, can come with additional legal risk. For more information, check out the Repro Legal Helpline or AFO’s Legal Access Program..

Abortion Fund of Ohio does not provide abortion procedures nor abortion pills (Mifepristone and Misoprostol). As an abortion fund, we work with abortion providers to help folks get the care they need, but we do not provide it directly. More information on the safety, efficacy, and use of abortion pills can be found on the Plan C Pills website.
